Youth in Action
"Youth in Action" provides a description of the issues and prevention projects that OCFNLP chapter leaders are addressing in their schools and communities! See below for a look at what a few of the OCFNLP chapters have been working on!
Chapter Highlights
St. Callistus Youth Ministry (Garden Grove)
Topic: Mini-grant
This new FNL chapter started in July 2009. In the process of establishing their chapter they applied for a $5000 mini-grant through Faith in Youth Program at Community Service Programs and were one of three applicants that were funded for one year. They will now focus on incorporating substance abuse prevention strategies into their church youth ministry, congregation and/or surrounding community. St. Callistus FNL is currently assessing the needs of their community and deciding on what specific project they plan to focus on for this year.
A. G. Currie Middle School (Tustin USD)
Topic: Rock-In, Lock-in & Sight Night
Currie Club Live finished up two events to kick off the school year. On Friday, October 23rd, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Currie’s Club Live leaders hosted a Rock-In, Lock-In. Around fifty students participated in fun activities, ate food, watched a movie, and completed crafts. This night provided students with a safe environment and promoted a healthy lifestyle. On October 28th, Currie’s Club Live chapter hosted a Red Ribbon Week Rally. During the rally the Club Live students led games, distributed flyers, and encouraged a drug-free lifestyle. Currie MS Club Live also has been actively collecting old eyeglasses for Sight Night. All glasses are donated to the Lions Club in Tustin, which are given to the less fortunate youth in other countries. Currie has a great group of youth this year and has more success ahead of them!
Ray M. Schmitt School (Westminster SD)
Topic: Red Ribbon Week 2009
Schmitt FNL Kids decided to do something very unique for Red Ribbon Week this year. Schmitt Elementary FNL Kids Advisor, Tony Perez, helped the students learn a traditional Hawaiian dance. During their Harvest Week Parade, the FNL Kids performed their dance in front of administrators, parents, and fellow students. The dance title was "Lei off drugs!" which was also the theme for their Red Ribbon Week. This was a great opportunity for the new FNL Kids chapter leaders to take part in and to start off the new school year. The event was awesome! Great job, Schmitt FNL Kids!
