Will experience a safe environment

Key Indicators

  • Emotional Safety: eg., everyone is expected to treat others with respect
  • Cultural Competency: e.g., youth from different ethnicities and cultures feel respected and affirmed
  • Physical Safety: e.g., youth are able to experience an alcohol, tobacco and drug free environment, and youth are safe from physical harm and violence

Will have opportunities for involvement and connection to community and school

Key Indicators:

  • Youth have opportunities to contribute to their community
  • Youth have knowledge of their community, what's available and accessible to them  

Will have opportunities for leadership and advocacy

Key Indicators:

  • Youth give significant input into action and event planning
  • Youth participate meaningfully in governance and policy-making for their chapter, council, program or broad structure

Will have opportunities to engage in meaningful skill building activities that are designed to capture the interest and participation of young people

Key Indicators:

  • Youth learn and practice new skills, such as public speaking, critical thinking or analytical skills, community organizing, and action planning
  • Skill building activities are designed based upon what young people are interested in

Will have opportunities for caring and meaningful relationships among youth and with adults

Key Indicators:

  • Guidance and practical support: e.g., youth are able to go to staff for guidance, to obtain resource and referral information, or for "navigation" advice
  • Emotional support: e.g., advisors pay attention to what's going on in the lives of youth members
  • Adult knowledge of youth: e.g., youth feel that adults know them well and that their relationships with adults are consistent over time
  • Peer knowledge of you: e.g., youth have opportunities to get to know their peers
