Advisors should be willing to:

  • Engage youth in problem solving, decision making, and developing interpersonal communication skills
  • Become an adult ally or partner (establish a positive and meaningful relationship with youth)
  • Provide a structure for youth to succeed
  • Be a positive adult role model
  • Have clearly defined goals and high expectations
  • Provide a fun and safe environment for youth to form positive peer relationships
  • Display a genuine interest in young people
  • Celebrate youth's successes and recognize their self-determination
